Our foe

So that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.  2 Corinthians 2:11

Paul wrote this in context of unforgiveness, saying that he had forgiven the person who smeared his reputation.  He was urging the Corinthians to do the same.  Why?  Because unforgiveness is one of Satan’s schemes to get a foothold into our lives.  A foothold is an open door to our hearts, allowing Satan the opportunity to mess with us.  There is a similar verse in Ephesians 4:26-27.  There Paul urges them to not let the sun go down on their anger to give the devil a foothold or an opportunity.

Satan loves it when people fight, and one of his schemes is to remind people of all of the offenses that other people have committed against you.  In John 10:10, John wrote that the thief (Satan) comes to steal and kill and destroy.  That’s who he is and what he does.  He hates us.  He wants to see our lives twisted in a gnarly mess of anger, bitterness, rage, unforgiveness, self pity, and revenge.  You now can grab a hold of the rest of John 10:10, which says that Jesus came to give us life to the full.  Out with old, in with the new!

Satan has other designs or schemes that he employs to try to wreck us.  John 8:44 tells us that Satan is “a murderer and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

In 2 Corinthians 12:14 Paul wrote that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”  That means that he tries to make his lies look so close to the truth that you might get duped.  He can duplicate miracles, like Pharaoh’s magicians did in Exodus 7.  You wouldn’t accept a $3 bill because you would know it is phony.  But you might accidentally have a counterfeit $5 bill.  That’s the kind of work Satan does.  He twists in a little truth to make something sound legitimate.  You need to bring things to God and to other wise counselors before jumping into something.

In 1 Peter 5:8-9  Peter admonishes, “Be sober-minded; be watchful.  Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  Resist him, firm in your faith.”  Satan and evil is he not something to play around with in any shape or form.  This includes Tarot Cards, Ouija Boards, seances, and other things like horror movies and heavy metal music that glorifies evil.  They are footholds for Satan to harass and to oppress you.  If you have been involved in something you know is on the side of evil, renounce it.  Ask God for His forgiveness and ask Him to seal off those areas with  the blood of Jesus.

Here is the good news: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”  1 John 4:4  God is in You and He is greater and stronger than Satan and anything that can come against you.
